This week, I woke to the devastating reports of a number of people being held hostage within a café in Sydney. I was completely shocked, as was the rest of the country. I then began to think about how those being held would be feeling and how worried their families and friends would be for them.
These thoughts led me to the conclusion of how lucky I am to be without those fears and worries and I felt overwhelmingly grateful for my situation. To express these emotions, I compiled a simple list of ten things I am extremely grateful for:
1. My loving and supportive family
2. My brilliant and kind friends
3. Bright sunny days with the perfect breeze to cool you down
4. My hilarious and loving furry friend, Rosie the dog
5. Sunday barbeques with the neighbours
6. My ability to run, walk, and exercise
7. Sunny days at the beach with perfect waves
8. My journey into self-acceptance, as it has taught me a lot about myself
9. Eating something you spent time and put effort into cooking
10. Simply being in a country where my safety is almost guaranteed, education is compulsory for everyone and women are free to make their own decisions
I find creating lists to be very therapeutic and creating a list or just jotting down what you were grateful for and what made you happy throughout your day is an effective way to reflect on the day you've just experienced. Start with making a list of three and as you begin to get the feel for what makes you happy, you will start to notice how things make you feel, and you will actively seek out and do those things. Once you start doing this your list will be so long, you will wonder why you didn't start writing down the happy things a very long time ago!
Until next time my lovelies,
Neve xx
